"BLACK RODGERS" (2011) - Written/Directed by: Jayson Johnson
Starring: Jayson Johnson, Troy Gittings
Director's Statement: When I set out to make "Black Rodgers," I had no idea what I was doing, but I knew I had to create something. I could barely edit or work with actors, but I had experience in creative areas like making props and costumes. Inspired by Mac Dre's "Black Buck Rodgers" and the 80's show "Buck Rodgers," I said, "Fuck it," and jumped in, knowing that even if I failed, at least I tried.
My goal was to create a fun blaxploitation sci-fi about an ordinary guy thrust into an extraordinary situation. Looking back, this film was as much about me as it was about the story. Stuck in a dead-end job, I was searching for a quantum leap, and I hoped this film would be the beginning of that journey. Through Jamal Rodgers' quest to thwart Dr. Smirk Barrows' world domination, I found my own way to break free.
